State monitors found sweeping problems in the
The county director has been removed, but Senate Democrats say Gov. Sonny Perdue has fallen woefully short of a campaign promise.
“Looking to the very top person in the state—Governor Sonny Perdue—who pledged to turn this situation around, we say: it continues to go downhill and the state is highly at risk of another expensive lawsuit because you failed to put people and policies in place at the top from the start to address the situation,” says Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta).
Senate Democrats are calling for audits of every county child and family services office.
Governor Perdue’s spokesman issued this statement in response:
“The Governor and First Lady work day after day on behalf of children and it is a shame that some Democratic lawmakers are trying to use these families in a partisan political way. We have made great strides, added hundreds of new caseworkers and greatly improved the system we inherited. Where there are shortcomings, we will work to address them. We would hope that these political critics would devote their energies to pitching in rather than piling on.”
