Georgia’s ports continue to be an economic boon for the state. According to a study by the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, the state’s deepwater ports supported more than 286,000 jobs last year. The study says in 2006 Georgia ports were responsible for $56 billion dollars in sales, $15 billion in income and nearly $3 billion in taxes. The Port of Savannah was the nation’s fastest-growing port between 2000 and 2005. Earlier this month, Georgia announced a partnership with South Carolina to build a new shipping terminal on the Savannah River.
