House sets limits on Peachcare eligibility

The Georgia House has passed a bill to make it harder for families to enroll in the Peachcare child health program.

“We do know it’s time to shut down some parts of this program and tighten it up because we almost ran it out of money,” said House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram). “We almost ran it off the edge and we, as a state, did not have the money to continue this program.”

The program is outspending its budget because of booming enrollment. But Democrats say the Republican majority is crying wolf because the U.S. Congress has vowed to send Georgia more money for Peachcare.

“Let’s not take advantage of this situation with Congress to take advantage of working families,” said House Minority Leader DuBose Porter (D-Dublin).

The bill says families of four can make no more than $40,000 per year to qualify for Peachcare. Today’s income limit is $47,000.

Current Peachcare enrollees would not be kicked out of the program, but they would have to pay more for vision and dental care.

The bill now goes to the State Senate.
