Federal officials want to know why a bus went up an exit-ramp at full speed in Atlanta early Friday morning in a tragic accident that killed six people. Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board say it is clear that the bus driver did not intend to exit the carpool lane on the left-side of the interstate. There are several black and white signs announcing the upcoming exit, but the NTSB says there are NO visible signs telling drivers to slow down. A Georgia DOT official says road signage was up to federal standards. The exit ramp remains open to traffic, and work crews have repaired damage to the overpass where the bus carrying a college baseball team from Ohio, plunged off the overpass onto the road below.
Five of the baseball players and their coach remain in Atlanta-area hospitals this morning. They are still being treated. Coach James Grandey is in critical but stable condition. Two of the players are listed as critical, two serious, the other listed as fair.
Several of the players who survived Friday's bus crash in Atlanta, have now returned with their families to Ohio. About 30 people stepped-off a charter flight provided by AirTran on Sunday. The plane also carried back to Ohio the four players killed in the accident.
