Dozens evacuated as fires continue

Hundreds of firefighters from throughout the country are in south Georgia, as efforts continue to bring fires in the Waycross area under control.

In Astoria, residents have been allowed back in their homes, however the community remains on evacuation alert.

Traci Smith is with Georgia’s Emergency Management Agency.

“About 70 households are affected and the collective agencies have been proactive in ensuring that shelters is provided that is at the Waycross Middle School and it will remain available for the individuals to be houses as long as the evacuation is in effect.”

The evacuation alert will remain in effect through the weekend, as warmer temperatures are expected to continue, with no rainfall in sight.
