Savannah is trying to position itself as a regional leader in energy research and a national conference there could help burnish that reputation.
Savannah is home to a major import site for liquefied natural gas. A major employer is Colonial Oil. And research is being done here into wind and tidal power.
Howard Morrison, helping to organize the National Conference on the Advancement of Research, says these are some of the reasons he believed a national conference on energy, policy, science and security issues was a perfect fit for Savannah.
“A lot of those things aren't assets that a Charleston has, that a Charlotte has, that a Memphis has,” he says. “So we have some unique assets here that we’re trying to benefit from.”
About a hundred people are expected over three days, including an Undersecretary of Energy, as well as military, commercial and academic concerns. The NCAR conference is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Savannah.
