The Georgia Forestry Commission is investigating whether some of the fires in Southeast Georgia were intentionally set. Forestry Commission spokesman Eric Mosely says, a fire in Ware County is suspicious enough to warrant an arson investigation.
"The fire was started just off the road near one of the major thoroughfares," Mosely said. "So, we know that the amber couldn't have flown over the line and sat in the area for that many days and no one seen it."
Mosely says, another fire in Charlton County was too far away from any hot spot to have been set naturally. Both are being investigated.
The 2-fires causing the most concern right now, however, are not among those with arson suspicions. The 87-thousand acre fire in the Okefenokee Swamp area started with a power line falling over. The cause of the newer, 4-thousand acre fire in Atkinson County is still undetermined, but arson is not suspected.
Forestry officials are hoping a slight increase in humidity over the next few days will help tamp down the worst wildfires in Georgia history.
