Georgia Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss is back from another visit to Iraq. He says he’s “guardedly optimistic” as to how things are going there.
Chambliss says he saw continued improvement in the situation on the ground. His delegation met with Iraqi political leaders, and saw what he believes to be good military progress. He said Iraqi leaders gave him assurances they are on the way to meeting “benchmarks” the U-S would like to achieve.
Chambliss says he also met with Georgia troops, and praised their work. He also relayed some of their concerns:
“they’re a little bit frustrated and somewhat confused by what’s happening in the political world in Washington relative to the issue with the supplemental budge….but at the end of the day these men and women know they’re there to do a job”.
This was the fifth trip to Iraq for Chambliss, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
