Georgia sports for Tuesday, May 8th

The Braves dropped the opener of their 4-game series against the Padres last night, 4-2 the final from Turner Field in Atlanta.

San Diego starting pitcher Chris Young handcuffed the Braves in his 6 innings of work: only 2 hits and 2 runs allowed along with 8 strikeouts. The Braves only had 3 hits on the evening. Chuck James on the Atlanta-mound, not as strong: 3 hits and 2 runs with 4 walks across 3 and two-thirds innings.

2nd baseman Marcus Giles returned to face his old team. He had a 1-for-5 night at the plate.

A star quarterback for Brookwood High School is fighting for his life. 17-year-old Daniel Peek was involved in a one-car accident late Saturday night. Alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the wreck, when Peek’s Jeep ran off a roadway near Snellville, hit a mailbox and flipped over.
Peek is at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville on a respirator. He is listed in critical condition with severe head injuries. Brookwood football coach Mark Crews postponed indefinitely the start of the team’s spring practice this week.
