Northeast Georgia airport could expand

Debate is brewing over whether to extend the runway at the Northeast Georgia Regional Airport near Winder.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Barrow County is buying land near the airport. The land could be used to extend the runway or attract industry to the area.

But people who live nearby aren’t happy about it. They say the runway doesn’t need to be extended.

The airport says extending the runway by 15-hundred feet would allow corporate jets to take off with a full tank of gas and therefore fly longer distances.
