A security lapse has exposed the personal and medical information of 140-thousand babies. The Georgia Department of Human Resources Wednesday mailed letters to parents of infants born between April of last year, and March 16th of this year. The state says records with their Social Security numbers and medical histories were improperly thrown out. The director of Georgia's Division of Public Health, Stuart Brown, calls it a "tremendous mistake".
Information was contained on supplemental forms filed with birth certificates. The forms were not shredded after being entered into a computer. Brown said staff turnover was to blame for the mistake, but that the problem has been corrected. There is no evidence of any misuse of information that was compromised.
