Public school students in Southeast Georgia's Ware County won't have to make up days they missed because of the wildfires.
Students missed 8-days of classes as smoke and fire made travel too dangerous for them to come to class in the weeks following the outbreak of the first major blaze on April 16th. Students at the time were in the middle the Criterion Referenced Competency Test, an all-important multi-day state-mandated exam.
The state Board of Education now has granted Ware County a waiver for having to make up those missed days. The board also is exempting elementary and middle school students there from taking the science and social studies portions of the C-R-C-T. High school students won't have their End of Course test scores counted as part of their grades.
Meanwhile, other fire-ravaged counties could be granted waivers without the board's approval. In order to expedite waiver-granting, the board is giving State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox temporary authority to grant waivers to Atkinson, Bacon, Brantley, Charlton, Coffee and Pierce County schools.
