Georgia sports for Friday, June 8th

The Braves opened a new series, with the same frustrating result. It was a 5th loss in their last 6 games, in the 2-1 loss to the Cubs last night. The Braves could not solve Chicago starting pitcher Rich Hill--he matched a career high with 11 strikeouts, allowing only 3 hits in 8 innings. Andruw Jones' solo home run accounted for the only Atlanta-run. Game-2 of the series tonight from Turner Field--Lance Cormier gets the pitching assignment.

The major league baseball draft opened yesterday. The Braves took some homegrown talent with their 1st round selection. Jason Heyward is an outfielder from Henry County High School. He was the Braves' pick at #-14 in the 1st round. It's the Braves' highest selection since 1991. Heyward also represents the 4th Georgian taken as a Braves' 1st pick in the last 8 years.

Following Heyward, the Braves had a couple more state players taken in their next few picks, including University of Georgia relief pitcher Joshua Fields, and pitcher Cory Gearrin of Mercer University.
