Report: Bottled H2O no better than the free stuff

According to the group "Food and Water Watch", Americans are drinking water at a rate of nearly nine million dollars a year.

What might surprise some consumers says the group's executive director, Wenonah Hauter, is where all that bottled water comes from. "The big soft drink brands....they are filtered tap water. The local brands ...are often just tap water."

Hauter says unlike regularly inspected municipal water supplies, the bottled water industry goes largely uninspected because the FDA doesn't have the manpower.

One of the biggest names in the bottled water business is Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, with its line of plain and flavored Dasani waters. A spokesperson for Coca-Cola disputed the reports claims and says the company's water meets the highest of both the EPA and the FDA's bottled water inspection standards.
