Davis execution nears

Time is running out for Troy Davis, the Georgia death row inmate convicted of killing a Savannah police officer nearly 18-years-ago. Davis' execution is scheduled for Tuesday at the state prison in Jackson.

On Monday, his lawyers will get what could be their last, best chance to halt his death by lethal injection. They'll ask the state Board of Pardons and Paroles either to commute or stay the sentence.

The looming execution brought together about 70-supporters, including event organizer Aleta Toure, at a vigil at Savannah church on Saturday.

"We're sending love to the family," said Toure. "We understand that this is a grief and traumatic time to the family. We want justice for Troy."

The case has attracted international headlines, in part, because several witnesses who implicated Davis in the killing of officer Mark MacPhail have recanted their testimony and said they were coerced into making statements against Davis. If none of those witnesses show at today's hearing, it could spell trouble for Davis and his supporters.
