The longest-serving commander of the U-S Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay is leaving Friday. At a short ceremony, Captain Ward Stevens will relieve Captain Mike McKinnon of his command.
McKinnon came to Kings Bay three years ago. Since then, the base has earned national recognition for its child education and occupational safety programs. McKinnon says, his biggest accomplishment involves quality of life on base.
"It's kind of a nebulous thing, kind of hard to measure," he says. "But family readiness directly links to warfighting readiness."
The base recently built a $300,000 recreation facility and opened an on-base lounge.
Kings Bay also had to deal with the coming of a massive new private marina expected to add hundreds of boats on the sensitive waters near what is a nuclear arsenal. Five submarines ported at Kings Bay carry nuclear missiles.
