New campaign to highlight immigrant contributions

Supporters of immigrants' rights were in Atlanta today, to kick off the "Labor of Love," campaign designed to remind Georgians of the significant contributions immigrants have made to the state's growth. Immigrants of many nationalities gathered across from the state capitol as they prepared to deliver red white and blue bouquets to legislative leaders. As the multi-ethnic Labor of Love Campaign kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month, the group wants lawmakers and ordinary citizens to remember how immigrants fueled Georgia's economic and social success.

Gyla Gonzalez heads up Latinos United of Carroll County. She says the Labor of Love Campaign was begun because immigration issues are often negatively portrayed in the media. "When we are saying Labor of Love campaign it is sending the message of love. To understand the immigrant community is here and we are working. And to see that the love that we can have of accepting the diversity that exists in our state. Love is the most powerful feeling that we can have."

Bouquets were delivered to the offices of Gov. Sonny Perdue and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagel. Neither were available for comment or to personally acknowledge delivery.
