Nursing home residents out in 36 hours

The last of 71 residents of a shuttered Southeast Georgia nursing home were moved to alternative homes today.

Forum Health Care nursing home in Brunswick couldn't pay staff, couldn't buy food and was in shotty physical condition. The state Department of Human Resources shut it down on Friday.

Families scrambled to find places for loved ones. State officials moved Danny Ramsey's paralyzed brother J.C. an hour an half away.

"You just feel helpless and you are, you're upset, you're hurt," Danny Ramsey says. "It's emotional."

Teams worked through the weekend to find safe housing for all 71 residents. D.H.R. spokesman Tom Wilson says, officials did what they could to keep them close-by.

"It was going to be an inconvenience, but the alternative was to leave them someplace we just didn't feel was safe," Wilson says.

This is the third nursing home owned by Forum to be closed by the state recently. D.H.R. closed two of the company's nursing homes in Rome this summer for failing to meet standards.
