Two new programs in coastal Glynn County aim to get guns off the streets, but at least one could find limited success. Both programs, one run by Glynn County Police and the other by Brunswick Police, come in the wake of the fatal shootings of two Brunswick teens.
Glynn County police are now offering $1,000 in exchange for information that leads to the recovery of an illegal gun, one owned by someone who should not be in possession of it. It's called a "gun bounty" program.
But it differs from the program taking place in Brunswick this weekend. In Brunswick's "gun buyback" program, the city will offer 50 dollars to people who turn in a gun at a local park on Saturday.
But Brunswick Police Chief Edna Johnson says, she doesn't expect many criminals to turn in guns. Jackson says, "Probably not. But someone, a mother, a father, an aunt an uncle that know there's a gun in their home that shouldn't be in the home, we're hoping they're going to turn those guns in."
Nationwide, gun buybacks have had limited success stopping crime. Still, Jackson says, it's worth a try.
