'Step down' says faith group to minister

A national faith-based organization wants the husband of an Atlanta-based televangelist suspended because of spousal abuse allegations.

Late last month, Thomas Weeks allegedly assaulted his wife, popular televangelist Juanita Bynum. Witnesses say Weeks assulated Bynum as she lay on the group outside a restaurant nearly Atlanta's airpot. The incident followed a reconciliation attempt, after months of separation.

Now, the Washington, DC-based National Black Church Initiative says Weeks owes an apology both to his wife and to all Christians.

Although the couple's international ministry -- Global Destiny Ministries -- is not part of the National Black Church Initiative, the group is calling for Weeks to step down from the church he and his wife co-founded.

The group says the charges against Weeks hurts the entire Christian faith. They also want Weeks to publicly apologize, and get counseling.

Atlanta police have charged Thomas Weeks with assault. He also faces charges of threatening to kill Bynum.

Family members said recently that Juanita Bynum is recovering and remains secluded in metro-Atlanta.
