Residents protesting a jail expansion in coastal Brunswick say they could file a lawsuit to stop the controversial project.
Glynn County officials say, they need a bigger jail to ease overcrowding and keep inmates near the downtown courthouse. The jail sits across the street from the Brunswick waterfront.
Residents have objected to the expansion as a bad deal for taxpayers and a blight on downtown revitalization plans. Residents like Jeff Kilgore say, they only found out about it a few months ago.
"There has not been proper public notice," Kilgore says. "We believe we were caught off guard."
The two sides plan to discuss jail this week, but opponents said over the weekend that that meeting might not happen if county officials don't provide them with what they say is jail's true cost. Officials peg at between $10-14 million.
In the meantime, demolition at the site already has begun.
