In East GA schools, recent outbreaks of drug resistant staph infections, known as MRSA, have left many parents worried. Now, two students at Coosa High School in Floyd County were diagnosed with drug resistant staph infections. Officials say not to worry. The infection is treatable, just not with the common antibiotic, methicillin.
Floyd County School representative, Tim Hensley, says all Floyd County schools are working with the Health Department to make sure they’re cleaned properly, but parents play a big role as well.
“The biggest thing, and we try to stress that with parents, is good hygiene, and washing your hands a lot, before you eat, after you work out in a weight room, and wiping down equipment; things we should be doing all the time.”Henson says the county is involved in a state wide initiative to educate students about MRSA and how to prevent it.
