Governor Sonny Perdue was on hand at Odyssey III shelter in Atlanta, as the group served its 1-millionth meal today. The Governor dished up spaghetti with ground venison. Georgia Hunters for the Hungry donated the deer meat, which was served with green beans, garlic bread, and sweet tea. The Governor called this the perfect time of year to remember those less fortunate.
"The reason that we celebrate, the person that we celebrate during this time of year, this is what He commanded us to do. Is to reach out and meet the needs of others. I want to encourage everyone to volunteer, their efforts and their time to our state food banks."State officials estimate that each month, 1 in 5 Georgia children face going hungry. And say, they've seen a rise in the number of families asking for food donations, particularly in Northeast Georgia and in the metro Atlanta area. This is the 15th year Georgia Hunters for the Hungry has donated ground venison to food banks. In 2006, the group distributed more than 30-thousands pounds of deer meat statewide.
