Shrimp season extended, harvest down

Shrimpers will have more time to harvest their tasty catch from the Georgia coast. The state Department of Natural Resources is extending Georgia’s shrimping season through January. The move is not unusual, however. The season has been extended in all but 3-years since 19-78. This year’s catch is about 1-point-3 million-pounds, down 50-percent over the 10-year average. The decline is blamed on the fact that fewer shrimpers find the business viable in the face of rising fuel prices and declining value for their product.
