Hill (R-Marietta) supports reworked gun bill

The state senator who earlier this week introduced legislation to let licensed gun owners take their guns onto state owned lands, says he's pleased with a compromise bill reached Tuesday night in the Senate Rules Committee.

In addition to the public parks and lands provision, the reworked bill lets legal gun owners lock their guns in their car at work. But only if the property owner gives the go-ahead.

Business owners opposed the measure, because it would have weakened the rights of property owners.

Republican Senator Judson Hill of Marietta says he's sympathetic to business owners, but believes the new bill is a good compromise.

"I actually share a lot of those concerns. I'm concerned when we have an intersection frankly between a second amendment right, and a fourth and a ninth amendment Constitutional right, which is a property right. Fundamentally, our right to keep and bear arms comes out of a desire to allow people to protect themselves."
The measure goes before the Senate for a vote on Thursday.
