There’s been a delay in the change of management of a federal site that processes nuclear materials.
A group representing the longtime managers of the Savannah River Site has filed a legal protest trying to stop new managers from taking over.
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions was scheduled to start managing the site this week.
The federal government recently awarded a $4 billion contract to the company.
But the takeover would knock out Washington Savannah River Company, who has managed the site since 1989.
The U.S. General Accounting Office is reviewing the protest.
The agency has until May 1 to issue its recommendations.
Until then, the Washington Savannah River Company will continue to head the site.
The Savannah River Site spans 310 square miles along the South Carolina-Georgia border.
It is one of the region’s top employers, with 6500 people working in management and operations there.
