New York City firefighters are being kicked out of Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade. Parade officials say the firefighters repeatedly violated parade rules, namely, drinking during the parade and throwing beads to the crowd.
The parade's general chairman John Forbes says, the parade is not, as some see it, a beer-busted Mardis Gras. "We've had to work really hard to make this a family-oriented parade," Forbes says. "Our angle is it's really a religious aspect. We're celebrating the Feast of St. Patrick."
Officials are allowing the firefighters' fife-and-drum corp to march but Forbes warns firefighter snot file in in behind them.
The Savannah man who coordinates the firefighters' appearances here says parade officials are overreacting. The N.Y.F.D. has been in Savannah's St. Patricks's Day parade, the nation's second largest, since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
