Perdue Wants to Keep Property Tax Break Small

Governor Perdue said today he is not supportive of restructuring Georgia's propoerty Tax system, but prevers small tax reductions. In his State of the State address Governor Perdue proposed a constitutional ammendment to cut $94 million in property and car taxes by eliminating the state portion. That would average to about 30 dollars per homeowner.

House Speaker Glenn Richardson has a more radical Property tax cut in mind. he wants to replace the part that pays for schools with and expanded sales taxes.

Pedue says he's not ready for such a switch.

"I don't think the public feels that they want to make a hard right or hard left 90 degree turns on taxes," he said. "They want something they can understand and they can understand this."

The state house is expected to take up Glenn Richardson property Tax reform bill soon. Meanwhile Public School systemthroughout the state are gearing up for a tough fight.
