GA Senate approves TAD resolution

The State senate has passed a measure that would give local municipalities greater control over how school dollars are spent on redevelopment.

The bi-partisan resolution was approved by the Senate 46-3. It is intended to circumvent a recent Georgia Supreme Court decision that involved the 2.8 billion dollar Atlanta belt line redevelopment project. Money to pay for the Beltline would have come from property tax increases, known as tax allocation districts or TADs.

Senator Dan Weber of Dunwoody sponsored the pro-TAD resolution.

"There are a lot of projects throughout Georgia, some large ones, where these tax allocation districts were under various stages of moving forward when the decision came down. And, its created some disruption for those governmental entities."
Like theSenate, the state's House of Representatives is also considering a pro-TAD measure. And, although the state's highest court had ruled TADs unconstitutional, if the measure passes in the House, the question of TAD funding will go to voters this fall as a Constitutional Amendment.
