New distribution center, cranes green-up Savannah shipping

Twin announcements in Savannah today have the shipping industry thinking green.

The California industrial developer A.M.B. unveiled a massive new distribution center built on speculation in Bloomingdale. The 340,000 sq. ft. warehouse is expected to house an import-export business. A.M.B. Vice-President John Morgan says, it was built to exacting environmental standards.

"If you look at the amount of water savings, you could provide drinking water for all of the city of Bloomindale for 1-point-2 years," Morgan says.

Bloomingdale has about 2,700 residents.

At the busy Port of Savannah, officials briefed reporters on initiatives to expand rail, reuse materials and conserve feul. Ports Authority Executive Director Doug Marchand says, new cranes will use electricity instead of diesel fuel.

"And so we had to set our terminal up in order to give the cranes access to shore power," Marchand says.

The announcements come as area truckers complain of high gas prices.
