Georgia’s Supreme Court has again turned down the appeal of death row inmate Troy Davis. The justices ruled 4 to 3 today to deny Davis’ motion for reconsideration of its March 17th ruling that he shouldn’t get a new trial. Davis’ lawyers have been asking for a hearing on evidence they say proves their client’s innocence.
Davis was convicted of killing Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989. Since that time, several witnesses have recanted their testimony that originally helped to convict Davis.
Last July, Davis was a day away from being put to death when the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles granted a stay of execution.
