The Senate unanimously approved a measure that would allow life without possibility of parole for persons convicted of certain classes of felony crimes. Earlier in the session, the House unsuccessfully attempted to attach an amendment that would have allowed judges to sentence defendants to death, absent a unanimous death penalty verdict by a jury.
