Death penalty conviction challenged

The Georgia Supreme Court will hear the death penalty case today of a man condemned for murder in 1995. Frederick Whatley’s lawyers appeal a Superior Court decision that denied his petition for habeas corpus. That would have allowed Whatley to challenge his conviction for the murder of a Griffin businessman.

Whatley challenged his conviction 10 years ago in the same court to no avail. The US Supreme Court refused to hear his case in 1999.
