A newly released study rates the states on the welfare of its children. Here in Georgia, there have been some improvements and some set-backs, as well.
The annual report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation - titled Kids Count -- scored areas like infant mortality, the number of children living in poverty as well as teen birth rates. This year’s assessment ranked Georgia fortieth in the nationwide study. The good news is … over the last five years, infant mortality rates have dropped, as have childhood deaths.
However, the number of children living in poverty has increased as well as the number of children living in families where no parent has a full-time, year-round job.
States scoring highest in the Kids Count survey were concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest, with New Hampshire coming in first place.
Ten states trail Georgia. Most are all in the South except for New Mexico and Oklahoma. They all have large minority populations.
