The National Transportation Safety Board has released its findings in March 2007 bus crash in Atlanta. Five stduents from Ohio's Blufton University died in the crash, dozens more were injured.
The report concludes that the 65 year old bus driver is partly to blame for the deadly crash.
Mark Rosenker chairs the national transportation safety board. He believes the right safety equipment -- including seat belts -- could have minimized the losses. But, Rosenker wants more than just seat belts.
"It is making the vehicle crash worthy. That would include better glazing of the windows, stronger roof lines. Creating stronger seats, creating a compartment where in fact, if, people were pushed around in it, they wouldn't necessarily be ejected."Rosenker also attributes the accident to poorly place road signs.
"They should have been next to each other. One that showed with an arrow that if you go to the left you will be in the exit lane. And, another that shows if you remain in this lane, you will be in the through lane. The problem was they had such a description, about a quarter of a mile before getting there."In response to the accident, Georgia DOT officials have changed the placement of its highway signs at the Howell Mill Road exit on I-75.
