State shortage of family doctors

Georgia is in need of more doctors going into family medicine. A recent study shows that of 385 students who graduated from medical schools in the state this spring, only 20 chose residencies in family medicine. That number represents half-as-many as 5 years ago. Health officials stress the serious nature of the problem as family doctors are often the primary health care providers in their communities. More than a third of Georgia's counties--many rural--are designated as having a shortage of primary care professionals.
