The largest employer in coastal Georgia's Glynn County is laying-off more than 300 workers as the travel and home-buying industries continue to slump. The Sea Island Company has about 2,100 employees and its major businesses are exclusive resorts and real estate development along Georgia's coast. The company is laying off employess at all levels of its operation.
A spokeswoman says, the cuts come as part of a top-to-bottom review of company operations and were forced by the national economic downturn. She says, the review found areas of the company were overstaffed and that many of the lay-offs will come from seasonal workers, who would have left the company at the end of the summer.
