Fay to bring mosquitoes

Mosquito larvae lay in wait for just a storm like this. And now officials in Chatham County are telling residents to prepare.

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Fay is causing more than just flooding. Just in time for Labor Day weekend, health officials are issuing a mosquito warning.

The rain and tidal surge generated by the tropical storm will likely result in what a county spokesman calls a "significant mosquito emergence" over the next few weeks.

Mosquito control operations will go into high gear once the bugs emerge. Aerial and ground spraying just once might not be enough in some places. Savannah-area residents can expect multiple sprayings.

Fortunately, there has been no detected mosquito-born viruses in Chatham County this year. And because officials put the risk of virus transmission at "very low" for the rest of 2008, they're calling the post-Fay mosquitofest a "nuisance emergence."
