The state of Georgia wants the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on its decades-long water war with neighboring Alabama and Florida. Georgia has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling said the state needs congressional approval to use more water from Lake Lanier. The federal reservoir is metro-Atlanta’s main water source. Five years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed to allow an increase in Georgia’s water use from 13 percent to approximately 22 percent. Florida and Alabama protested. The three states share the Chattahoochee River which feeds the reservoir north of Atlanta. Earlier this year, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington threw out the agreement, ruling that Georgia and the Corps first needed congressional approval. And, earlier this week, a federal judge said he’ll decide whether or not Georgia even has a right to the water in Lake Lanier.
