The National Park Service is expanding access to Cumberland Island National Seashore. Parts of Cumberland Island are currently accessible only to the heartiest and wealthiest travelers.
For visitors that can hike 14-miles or kayak a similar distance -- or stay at an exclusive inn -- they can visit today some rarely-seen historic sites that soon anyone will be able to access on park-sponsored van tours.
The change comes from a Congressional mandate that opened up an area previously classified as wilderness.
On Tuesday, park officials were scheduled to detail exactly how they planned to conduct the tours, but late Tuesday, those plans were still not available. The plans will detail how many tours per day, where the tours will go and who will operate them.
Once released, the plans will be open to public comments and possibly a bidding process before vans will roll.
