A new deepwater port on the Savannah River could bring Georgia and South Carolina $2.3 billion in new revenue. The potential economic impact figure comes from a preliminary report issued by the Jasper Ocean Terminal Joint Project Office. The bi-state agency is in charge of developing a new port on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River.
According to the report, the port's potential earnings would pay for itself. The authors of the report also forecast that in 2024, regional shipping demands will exceed supply. Officials say, the port could be ready as soon as a decade before then.
Local officials have known for some time that the port could have a huge impact on the regional economy. This week's figures put a little more detail in that knowledge.
