The City of Savannah is developing rules that could hold negligent parents responsible for their children's anti-social behavior. Details should come Wednesday outlining the city's exact plans, but from what's known about the Parental Responsibility Ordinance so far, parents could face fines or community service if their children engage in anti-social behavior and the parents refuse to do anything about it.
Anti-social behavior could be criminal acts, truancy, curfew violations or school discipline problems. A parent's responsibility could kick in if the parent doesn't attend required counseling or provide supervision.
The initiative comes a few years after Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson pledged to speak quote "hard truths" and act as Savannah's own "Bill Cosby" in addressing social problems in his final term. The Parental Responsibility Ordinance will be discussed at the City Council's Quarterly Town Hall meeting.
