The state's Teacher Retirement System's governing board will consider today whether to cancel automatic cost-of-living benefit increases for thousands of former Georgia teachers. The executive director of the System tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution his office has been flooded with emails and letters on the proposed change. Governor Sonny Perdue wants to have the board vote annually on whether to fund the benefit pool. For nearly 40 years, the two-times-a-year 1.5 percent increases have been automatic. But the two teacher pension funds have taken big hits from the stock market this year.
