The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and six surrounding counties have agreed to study the economic impact of drought-stricken Lake Hartwell. The $211,000 study will be split by the Corps and the six counties: Hart, Stephens and Franklin counties in Georgia; and Oconee, Pickens and Anderson counties in South Carolina. The study, which is expected to begin in about two months, will determine how the region's economy shifts as the reservoir's levels rise and fall. Hartwell is a 56,000-acre lake that is hovering about 16 feet below normal levels, leaving docks and marinas high-and-dry.
