Georgia lottery sales remain brisk despite the deepening recession. The lottery is set to the end the first half of this fiscal year with a modest gain, coming after a record $3.5 billion in sales last year. Still, Georgia Lottery C.E.O. Margaret DeFransisco says, she doesn't expect lottery sales to escape the recession.
"We actually do see an impact," DeFransisco says. "And you know, we're not a necessity. We're an entertainment product. So, if people are having to deal with necessities, we're not in that group."
The lottery's latest Mega Millions jackpot has grown to $146 million. The multi-state game jackpot soared after no one hit the $128 million jackpot on Tuesday.
