Newspaper: Bishop's Wife Received Son-in-law's Pay

A newspaper is reporting that the wife of Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop drew more than $7,000 in pay earned by her son-in-law from the Muscogee County marshal's office.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported Wednesday that Stephen M. Reese was paid $7,275 from November 2007 to July 2008 as an assistant for the Junior Marshal program.

The newspaper says records show the money was deposited into a bank account in the name of Vivian Creighton Bishop, the congressman's wife and clerk of the Columbus Municipal Court.

The Junior Marshal program is funded in part by a federal grant secured by the congressman.

Columbus Internal Auditor John Redmond says the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter and other issues related to the congressman, his wife and the program.

Vivian Creighton Bishop said she had been advised not to comment on the matter.
