Governor Sonny Perdue has signed into law a pair of bills aimed at protecting victims' rights. One new measure now will allow a pre-recorded audio or video statement by loved ones of a slain victim in sentencing phases of murder trials. That would be a change from current law requiring statements be made in person. The other measure of the new victims’ rights--those who have suffered a mental injury will get access to therapy and services. Current state law extends that benefit only to victims who suffered a physical injury.
