An Alabama man has been sentenced to death for a 2005 killing of a Georgia man. David Wiggins of Fort Mitchell, Ala., was convicted last month for murdering 58-year-old Kyle Cavins. Russell County Circuit Court Judge George Greene imposed the death penalty Thursday as Cavins' widow silently sobbed in the courtroom. During the sentencing, Greene recounted details of the murder and spoke of Wiggins' abusive childhood and decades-long struggle with alcoholism. The judge also described how many blasts it took to kill Cavins, whose body was found by his wife and a friend outside the auto body repair shop where he worked. Wiggins was also found guilty of first-degree robbery for a carjacking that occurred the day after the shooting and will serve a consecutive life term for that sentence.
