Vandals Hit Historic Cemetery in Coweta County

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office is seeking help from the public to help identify people responsible for about $100,000 worth of vandalism in the historic Tranquil Cemetery near Turin, located between Newnan and Griffin. Police believe the vandalism happened between Saturday night and early Tuesday. Investigator Elaine Jordan said authorities found an estimated 50 graves--about one-third of the cemetery--desecrated.

The cemetery is located in a secluded area with graves dating back to the early 1800's.

Coweta County Teacher Job Fair Cancelled

With state funding cuts for schools, the Coweta School System officials have cancelled the annual teacher job fair.

Human Resources Director Mark Guy says open positions for the new Brooks Elementary School will be filled by personnel from other schools and the central office.

Personnel will be shifted into new jobs, or take on new responsibilities as others retire or leave.

The Coweta School System expects a shortfall from $5.4 million and $9.5 million for the 2009-2010 school year.

The state has issued a temporary waiver on the maximum class size, so the school system believes they can get by on 70 fewer teachers next year.

The Pennsylvania-based company says the distribution center will serve customers in the Southeast and areas of the Midwest.
