Georgia sports for Friday, Mar. 21st

The terrific run of last weekend for Georgia’s men’s basketball team ended in a 1st round loss yesterday in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs fell to Xavier 73-61 in action from Washington D-C. Georgia led by as many as 11 points in the game, but faded over the last 16 minutes of the game--getting outscored in that stretch 41-18. Head coach Dennis Felton says there was no factor of fatigue from his team’s 4-games-in-3-days-run last weekend to win the SEC Tournament.

"We had a real tangible experience of learning how we don't have to succumb to fatigue. I thought(in yesterday's game) we remained aggressive and played very hard until the end".

It was the final game in the college careers of senior Georgia players Sundiata Gaines and Dave Bliss. Georgia finishes their season with a 17-17 record.

The Atlanta Braves were winners in spring training action Thursday, a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in Orlando. Josh Anderson had a 2-run double in the 9th for the win. Chipper Jones at the plate had a home run and double. On the mound, it was another solid effort for pitcher Tim Hudson—-he scattered 5 hits and a run across 6 innings of work.

From the NFL, the Falcons have finalized a trade sending cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Oakland Raiders. The Falcons get a 2nd round draft pick in next month’s draft, and a 5th rounder next year. Hall with the Raiders gets a 7-year contract worth 67-million dollars, of which 24-and-a-half million is guaranteed money.

Georgia sports for Wednesday, Mar. 19th

The Atlanta Falcons are close to finalizing a trade with the Oakland Raiders. In the deal, the Falcons would send defensive back DeAngelo Hall out west in return for at least a 2nd round draft pick, and possibly another selection in this April’s NFL Draft. The wait is on Oakland’s side, as it is working out a new contract with Hall. Hall was a 2004 draft pick of Atlanta and two-time Pro Bowler, but is known just as much for his outspokenness--including clashes with former head coach Bobby Petrino.

Georgia’s men’s basketball team is getting set for its first-round game in the NCAA Tournament-—tomorrow afternoon in Washington D.C. against Xavier. The Bulldogs are in the tourney on the strength of their improbable run in winning last weekend’s SEC Tournament.

College baseball from Tuesday-—Ga Tech beat Kenn St, 10-0. Georgia’s club topped Western Carolina, 8-3.

From pro hockey, the Atlanta Thrashers were losers at Philidelphia 3-2.

Georgia sports for Thursday, September 27th

The lights are nearly out for the Braves' postseason hopes, in the wake of their 5-2 loss to the Phillies in Philidelphia last night. Tim Hudson suffered the pitching loss to drop his season record to 16-10. A key Chipper Jones throwing error paved the way for 3 Phillies' un-earned runs off Hudson. With 4 games left in the season, the Braves stand 4 games out of 1st in the NL-East, and 4 off the top for the wild card. Concerning the Phillies, their recent surge combined with the Mets' faltering play has drawn Philidelphia to within 1 game of New York in the division.

Atlanta Falcons defensive back DeAngelo Hall says he's been fined 100-thousand dollars by the team for his outburst during the Falcons' loss at home to Carolina last Sunday. Hall also might be suspended for some length of the team's upcoming game against the Houston Texans. Last Sunday, Hall was whistled for 3 penalties on the same Falcon defensive series. His outburst included 2 personal fouls and a heated exchange with coaches on the sidelines. Hall says he plans to appeal the team sanctions through the NFL Players Association.

From preseason hockey, the Atlanta Thrashers last night beat the Florida Panthers 4-1 in exhibition action. The team is coming down the stretch toward their season opener, a week from Friday.
